Digital Art Portfolio

My project is a continuation of my most recent fashion collection, "落叶归根: Fallen Leaves" . This collection was the result of a research project that I conducted in Summer of 2022, during which I traveled to Singapore and Japan to interview various designers, brand-owners, and artisans about sustainable fashion. What stood out to me most from all of my interviews was a strong emphasis on tradition and heritage as a means to practice sustainability in fashion. For a more in depth explanation of my research, reflections, and concepts for this collection, read my artist statement here.

For my portfolio project, I wanted to collage photographs of my pieces with images from my sketchbook to highlight my artistic process behind the collection. During my research and the development of my project, I kept a sketchbook/journal that included notes from my interviews, personal reflections, and sketches for designs. I collaged pieces from these pages onto photographs of the fashion pieces as quick-moving gifs. The words that I chose to collage include quotes from interviewees as well as excerpts from my personal reflections. I chose the words that I believe best represent my collection. I also utilized repetition of certain excerpts in each piece to emphasize the ideas that I see as most important. I also included some of my sketches to display my concept and idea alongside the final manifestation of my designs.

In my experience, viewers of my fashion pieces tend to focus on the aesthetic content but pay little attention to the concept and message behind the pieces. If I had simply made stagnant pieces, it would be easy for viewers to only read the snippets presented and not go out of their way to learn more. By inserting bits of text and sketches at such a fast pace, I hope to engage and draw viewers in and urge them to learn more about the collection.
